- 5 Hotels That Are Remaking Louisville
Kentucky’s largest city is in the midst of a hotel boom—with both renovations and new builds sprouting up.
One hundred years ago, the Brown Hotel opened in Louisville, Kentucky, resplendent with gilded ceilings and encrusted walls in a purpose-built Georgian Revival building that’s since been added to the national register. It would be nearly 85 years before another Louisville hostelry gained as much attention: the 21c Museum Hotel. An adaptive reuse of several 19th-century warehouses that featured interiors by architect and designer Deborah Berke and art everywhere, the property kicked off a boom that saw about 2,500 rooms added to the mix between 2014 and 2018.
Now, post-COVID, this city of 600,000—to which 19 million visitors come each year—is in the midst of another hotel renaissance, adding 25 properties to downtown and to neighborhoods like Highlands and NuLu since 2021 and through the next few years. Here, we look at a handful of new properties populating the southern city.
- New boutique motel opens in Bardstown, bringing ‘nostalgia’ to bourbon country
BARDSTOWN, Ky. (WDRB) — People long for the Great American road trip, and the Bardstown Motor Lodge is here for it.
Directly across from my Old Kentucky Home in Bardstown, the 70-year-old former Parkview Motel was recently purchased by Weyland Ventures and redone by Louisville-based Common Bond Hotel Collection, its 35 rooms now mid-century modern pops of color.
Carrie Osting, enjoying a staycation from Louisville this week, loved the unique spot in Bardstown.
“We like it. It’s cool. I like that it’s private, quaint. It’s different,” Osting said. We just decided ‘Hey, let’s find something new we haven’t done.’ I am not sure which one of us found this, but it was just something we stumbled upon and thought, ‘Hey, we’ll go to Bardstown.”
- Plans for courthouse hotel to preserve history of landmark
A boutique hotel coming to the center of Elizabethtown’s downtown received clearance Thursday from the city’s Historic Preservation Commission.
The hotel, which will honor the history of the former H.B. Fife Courthouse, is expected to have 25 rooms over three floors with a restaurant and bar on the third level, according to a presentation by representatives of Weyland Ventures.
“The third floor that was the old courtroom and judge’s chambers, that’s been carved up into offices,” said Ashlyn Ackerman, head of design Weyland Ventures. “When the county attorney was there, they did a wonderful job of sensitively putting those offices in there preserving the original ceiling, the original light fixtures, stained glass, so we’re really excited to bring those features back, preserve them and highlight them.
- Former Elizabethtown courthouse takes next step to becoming hotel
ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (WDRB) — After approval from the Historical Preservation Commission, the former Hardin County Courthouse in downtown Elizabethtown is another step closer to becoming a boutique hotel.
Weyland Ventures, which is designing the hotel, presented some of the renderings to the commission Thursday.
Plans for the hotel include 25 rooms throughout three stories. A restaurant and bar are planned for the third floor. The courtroom and judge’s chambers were once located on the same floor.
Most of the renovations will happen inside the building while trying to preserve the exterior of the former courthouse.
